But Ms Hung questioned why more than 600 other trees on the premises, including Banyan and palm trees, had been marked and numbered, which could mean more would be felled.

Liao Kok-che, who is charge of the YMCA camp, said no trees were felled as their trunks were intact, but the tops and branches had been cut off. This meant it was not necessary for the camp to apply for tree-felling permission. "We cut them low as we were afraid that they would fall down during storms and hurt people," said Mr Liao, who admitted most had been nine metres high but had now been halved.

The 50 trees were at least half a century old, according to Jim Chi-yung, a tree expert and chair professor of geography at the University of Hong Kong. He said the trees with their tops chopped off were as good as dead. forum.8cyber.comAxqY-m&yq2y

Mr Liao said a fencing hall and two basketball courts had already been built at the camp site for the institute, which has leased its premises. He insisted no trees had been uprooted, but the Lands Department said the group had felled three trees with its approval.

Professor Jim expressed outrage at the fellings and removals, saying trees had no protection with the absence of a tree ordinance. He said it takes two years to prepare a tree for transplanting, and they may die if all their roots are removed at once.
